Animé

This week will teach students step-by-step how to create their own Anime characters. Students will learn about Japanese culture through character development. Throughout the week students will analyze and study the history and growth of this Japanese art form. Students will learn to infuse their characters with personality and give their characters a unique flare.

Book Arts
This workshop will explore the art form of bookmaking. Students will learn various bookmaking techniques and incorporate collage, printmaking, and colorful textured paper to the books they create. From oddly shaped books, to tunnel books, participants will enjoy the endless possibilities of constructing their very own book.

Black and White Photography
This is a course in black and white photography using a 35mm camera. The course includes discussions and demonstrations and will focus on camera basics, composition, and darkroom techniques. By the completion of the class, students will have a preliminary understanding of black and white photography and will have created black and white prints to add to their portfolio. All darkroom and chemical fees included. Students must provide a 35mm camera with appropriate film.

Cartoon Illustration
Instruction will be given in various forms of cartoon illustration. The class will progress from creating and developing cartoon characters and illustrating a story to the sequential art illustration of comics. Students will learn how to sketch, design and develop characters, and create graphic backgrounds.

Ceramics
Sculptural, decorative, and functional possibilities in fired and self-hardening clay will be explored with weekly demonstrations. Hand-building techniques and basic glaze application will be covered.

Drawing
During this drawing workshop, students will meet each day to receive in-depth instruction on methods to enhance their overall drawing skills. Drawing from still life, landscape, and figures is the basis of this week.

Digital Photography
Students will learn the basics of using a digital camera. Each project will focus on a technical aspect of taking digital photographic images and printing them, while still challenging the photographer's creativity. Group critiques will help the students to evaluate the results of their own work and the work of their classmates. Students must provide their own digital cameras.

Fashion Week
Students will learn to create cutting edge fashion using untraditional materials. Plastic bags can make a beautiful gown, torn t-shirts can live again as a colorful skirt and newspapers can make gorgeous flowers to adorn your fashions. In addition to creating high fashion, this class will focus on drawing the dressed human form and learn the beginning concepts of using color to create a statement. Students will ‘hit the runway’ on the final afternoon to strut their stuff in the fashion show- don’t miss the fun!

Flash Animation!
Do you love watching movies like Ice Age or Toy Story? This class introduces students to the basics of animation, from traditional cell to computer. During this week, you will sketch and create storyboards, then design backgrounds and characters. You will create a variety of short movies in Adobe Flash that you can share online.

Kinetic Sculpture
This workshop will introduce students to sculpture and movement. Sculpture created during the week will contain moving parts or depend on motion for its effect. Participants will look at kinetic artists such as Alexander Calder, Marcel Duchamp and others who pioneered the art form.

Mixed Media and Collage
This workshop will investigate the two- and three-dimensional worlds of artists such as Louise Nevelson and Robert Rauschenberg. Students will learn techniques that incorporate everyday objects and recycled materials. As the artist Robert Rauschenberg said, "A picture is more like the real world when it is made out of the real world."

Printmaking
Students will explore the art of printmaking through various applications and techniques, including but not limited to monotypes and linoleum block. The classes will cover numerous techniques and applications of printmaking.

Sculpture
This course will introduce different techniques for working with a variety of materials such as plaster, papier-mâché and much more. Students will be encouraged to create three-dimensional pieces through investigating the sources and influences of their own ideas.
