WORKSHOPS
Artists' Books - An Introduction* T
What a perfect way to bid farewell to our "Materials Translations" exhibit - creating your own interpretation in this hands-on workshop! Participants will learn accordion folding and pamphlet stitching to create simple artists' books. We will begin by making a simple book from a single sheet of paper. Then we will make accordion books using long narrow sheets of paper. The more folds you make, the more pages you can have. Lastly we make single signature pamphlets. These books are created by nesting several sheets of paper together and stitching them into a heavy paper cover.
In this class, we will also make blank books, which can be used as journals or as models for planning books with content. We will discuss themes and possible ways to create personalized subject matter by working digitally and printing your pages on an inkjet printer.
Once you learn the basic structures, you can easily create your own artist books with a little advance planning. In addition, this is a great preparation for our "Photographer's Artist Book" class in the winter! Bring a bag lunch to enjoy during the break. All materials are included in the registration fee.

illuminated letters* T
Medieval scribes would marvel at today's materials for painting and gilding, but they would be right at home with most of the techniques still practiced. Choose an "exemplar" (a model) from a variety of decorative capitals of the Celtic, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and later periods- Latin or Hebrew- copy or modify it, or design your own. Techniques for inking, building up rich layers of opaque watercolor, and for applying gold leaf are demonstrated. The end result will be one or more frame-able, illuminated initials, approximately 5"x5" in size. Click here for materials list.
