Peter
Abrams likes to refer to himself as a reverse engineer. He has always
been intrigued by the world’s detritus, culling recycled materials
out of the waste stream and transforming them into objects of desire.
Referred to by others as a gifted artist and furniture designer, his
choice of raw materials is only one of the things that distinguish his
work. Elegance, comfort, functionality and a sense of humor complete
the recipe. Working in a studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn Pete began his
long and extremely happy relationship with recycled elevator cable. “It’s
flexible, yet incredibly strong; it has great texture, and lovely fluidity,” Abrams
enthuses. It was when he began to work with the different weights of
metal rope that he began to create furniture and his locally famous “firebowl.” “I
didn’t really plan to become so practical, the cable really suggested
it.” Pete currently works in his shop Modern Metal Work at
220 Allen Street in the heart of Trenton.
