Artist: Michael Graves    Title: Landscape in Graphite on Paper
Description: Graphite on paper    Medium: Graphite on paper    Size: 14” x 17”

Michael Graves, FAIA, has been in the forefront of architecture and design since he founded his practice in 1964. Today, his two firms—Michael Graves & Associates (MGA), the architecture and interior design practices, and Michael Graves Design Group, the product design and graphic design practices—employ over 100 people in offices in Princeton, NJ and New York City, NY. The architectural practice has designed over 300 buildings worldwide encompassing many building types: large-scale master plans, corporate headquarters and other office buildings, hotels and resorts, restaurants and retail stores, facilities for sports and recreation, healthcare facilities, civic projects such as embassies, courthouses and monuments, a wide variety of university buildings, museums, theaters and public libraries, and both multi-family and single-family housing. From early projects such as the award-winning Humana Building in Louisville, Kentucky, completed in the 1980’s, to more recent work such as the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport in The Hague, MGA has directly influenced the transformation of urban architecture and abstract modernism toward more contextual responses. MGA’s Interiors Studio provides design services for all of MGA’s architectural projects and also has an extensive stand-alone practice. Working in conjunction with the Michael Graves Design Group (MGDG), the Interiors Studio often custom-designs furniture and artwork that complement the character of the architecture and interiors. MGDG has designed over 2,000 consumer products, which include both building components such as lighting, hardware, bath, and kitchen products, and a wide variety of consumer products for home, office and personal use. MGDG’s strategic partnerships include manufacturers such as Alessi, Steuben, Dansk, Disney, David Edward Furniture, Delta Faucet and Progress Lighting, among others, in addition to retailers such as Target Stores and international distribution companies. MGDG has also designed innovative packaging and graphic identity programs supporting MGDG and MGA projects. Michael Graves’ firms have received over 185 awards for design excellence. In 2001, the American Institute of Architects awarded Michael Graves its Gold Medal, the highest award bestowed upon an individual. He also received the 1999 National Medal of Arts from President Bill Clinton and the 2001 Frank Annunzio Award from the Christopher Columbus Society, a prestigious award sanctioned by the U.S. Congress. In 2005, AIA New Jersey created the Michael Graves Lifetime Achievement Award and presented it to Mr. Graves in its inaugural year. A native of Indianapolis, Graves received his architectural training at the University of Cincinnati and Harvard University. In 1960, he won the Rome Prize and studied at the American Academy in Rome, of which he is now a Trustee. In 1962, Graves began a nearly 40-year teaching career at Princeton University, where he is now the Robert Schirmer Professor of Architecture, Emeritus. He has received 11 honorary doctorates and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters as well as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. In 2007, Mr. Graves received the Arts Council of Princeton’s Arts Vision Award. He is the designer of the Arts Council of Princeton’s new Paul Robeson Center for the Arts.
