New sculpture on view
May 7 – December7, 2011

Rory Mahon grew up in New York City and attended Cooper Union, NYC from 1972 –1976. From 1976 to 2004, he worked at the Johnson Atelier (at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ), taking a leave of absence from 1990 to 1998 to operate his own art foundry. At the Johnson Atelier he helped to develop and run the Sand Casting department, and was responsible for teaching apprentices these skills and other sculpture related disciplines. While there he made the bronze castings for many of the major sculptors working in metal today.

Mahon has extensive teaching and workshop experience in various schools, the Grounds for Sculpture, the New Jersey Governors School, and the University of the Arts Sculpture Department in Philadelphia. He also has given workshops and demos at many International Sculpture Center conferences, and throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Mahon worked for a period of time for the artist Julian Schnabel, making bronze castings of his sculpture and for the metal appointments and furnishings of Pallazo Chupi, his new building in
NYC. Mahon has also received two Art Fellowships from the NJ State Council on the Arts. Currently he is an art preparator at the Princeton University Art Museum.

Mahon runs his own sculpture and photography studio, constantly producing new work and showing in area galleries and museums. He continues to teach, and conducts popular workshops from his studio in the spring and summer, as well as teaching at other venues. He lives in Hopewell Township, New Jersey with his wife, stone carver Ayami Aoyama. Visit www.rorymahon.com for more information and to view images of Rory Mahon’s work.
